The Opportunity

The decisions behind the work may have another use

Businesses keep records to run operations. Some histories may also help AI developers understand how a real problem was handled and whether a result held up.

A possible return from work already recorded

A service report may explain why a technician chose one repair over another. A project history may show how a team handled a change in requirements. Those connections can be more informative than a final document on its own.

AI developers may use these examples to train a system or test how it handles a real situation. A buyer would still need to review whether your records suit that purpose.

What a licence means

Decide which records can be used and how

A licence gives someone permission to use specified records under terms you agree to. It does not mean selling your business.

You need to know who can use the records, for what purpose, for how long and what you would be paid. The agreement should also address whether the buyer has exclusive use and whether the records can be shared further.

Keeping a record does not automatically give you permission to license everything in it. Information about customers, employees or other businesses may need to be reviewed or excluded.

What makes records useful

File count does not tell the whole story

A history that can be followed

Can someone follow the original request, the work and the result? Missing steps can make a record harder to use.

A use that fits a buyer’s needs

A buyer needs records that help with a particular task. Useful detail alone does not mean it fits that task.

Rights and preparation

Do you have permission to license the records? What needs to be removed or prepared before they can be shared?

Terms worth proceeding with

Consider the payment alongside what the buyer can do with the records, whether the licence is exclusive and how much work your team would need to do.

Revenue and use

What could our records be worth?

A file count or company description is not enough to price them. Their value depends on what they contain, what a buyer needs and the work required to make them usable.

Could the same records be licensed again?

Possibly. It depends on your rights and the licence terms. An exclusive licence or other restrictions could prevent another sale.

When would we be paid?

The agreement would set out when payment is due and what has to happen first, such as delivery and buyer acceptance. There is no payment commitment at the enquiry stage.
